Southeast Asia's top diplomats have criticised North Korea over its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests.

The new raft of measures would be the seventh set of United Nations sanctions imposed on North Korea since it first carried out a nuclear test in 2006, but these have failed to compel Pyongyang to give up its missile programme.

Wang earlier said it was important that Ri is attending the Manila meetings "so he can listen to suggestions from various parties and has the right to present his views".

Wang said there was now a "high level of sensitivity and complexity" that had hurt China's relations with North Korea.

In a meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Wang said he told his counterpart "not to violate the United Nations decision or provoke the worldwide community's goodwill by conducting missile launches or nuclear tests".

How Wang will conduct himself on the North Korea issue will also be closely watched.

The resolution bans North Korea from exporting coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood, which bring the country more than $1 billion (849,000 euros) in revenue.

Malaysia's relationship with North Korea became tense after the assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged elder half-brother of North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un, at klia2 on Feb 13.

Japanese foreign minister Taro Kono urged his Southeast Asian counterparts to stop holding talks with North Korea to "pressure" the hermit state into halting its nuclear and ballistic missile tests, a foreign ministry spokesman from Tokyo said Sunday.

"It's not that easy but it is a direction we need to work together towards", Wang said of the six-nation talks.

With the US, Japan and South Korea expected to push for stronger actions against the North, a verbal showdown loom.

China and Russian Federation have previously resisted the United States push for sanctions, but Trump praised their decision to approve the latest measures, writing on Twitter: "China and Russian Federation voted with us".

In the ASEAN meeting with the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will discuss three basic issues - denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, counter-terrorism, and maritime security.

China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, upheld an impartial and objective position and played a responsible and constructive role in the process of the adoption of the resolution, Wang said. Authorities have said Islamic State's radical ideology is taking a hold in the country's south, with local groups using social media as a primary means of recruiting fighters, which include Indonesians, Singaporeans and Malaysians. "We looked forward to more high-level dialogues and exchanges between ASEAN and China", the ministers said.

Mr Cayetano said a proposal to issue a separate statement on the situation in the Korean peninsula was also being considered.
