GM recalling roughly 800000 pickups for steering defect

General Motors Co is recalling almost 800,000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks worldwide that could lose power steering, according to documents made public Friday.

Opinion for 690 thousand cars in the United States, 80 thousand - in Canada and about 25 thousand in other markets.

The 2014 Chevy Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD apparently has a software and voltage problem that causes a brief loss of the trucks' electric steering assistance when a strain is put on the system.

General Motors said, in a statement, the defect is in correlation to motor vehicle safety and can be found in some 2014 GMC Sierra LD and Chevrolet Silverado LD vehicles. It's a one-second occurrence that's the result of a software/electrical problem. To solve the problem, the GM dealers will reinstall the software. This fix is free for the owners. Chevrolet owners can reach out to customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

On Feb. 2, GM said it launched a safety investigation after customer complaints and submitted a recall on June 29.
