Marquez eyes Czech podium as tight MotoGP resumes

Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo took advantage of the summer break to enjoy a few days' holiday and keep in shape for the second half of the season, which gets underway with three particularly challenging races in the month of August.

His Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa was second, 12.438sec behind to become only the third rider to reach the podium 150 times in all categories after Italians Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi.

"These kind of races (mixed weather) can be very challenging and you have to remain focussed", Marquez said after negotiating his tyre change early in a race where wet conditions quickly turned to dry.

On his first run, Marquez slotted into second, 0.026s behind his Honda team-mate, but he managed to eclipse Pedrosa's time by more than three tenths on his second run, as he set a 1m54.981s to end up on top.

"The rear tyre was spinning too much, was too soft and I was losing many many positions", Marquez said.

FP1's fastest Zarco was fourth overall, ahead of Hector Barbera (Reale Avintia Racing), and Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Racing) after the rush at the end.

Maverick Vinales was a subdued seventh on the second Yamaha, almost six tenths slower than team-mate Rossi.

Indeed, it was Rossi who made for the most exciting viewing late in the race, with Marquez, Pedrosa and Vinales nearly in a procession on their way to the finish line.

Day 1's fastest Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) followed up his Friday heroics with another good result in qualifying, gearing up for the Czech GP at the head of the second row in P4. Jonas Folger (GER/ Yamaha Tech3) at 0.398, 3.

But he faces strong competition from the likes of World Championship leader Marc Marquez - now 10 points ahead of Rossi in the standings.

Dovizioso passed Danilo Petrucci on the penultimate lap for fifth place while Espargaro stayed ahead of his brother Pol for eighth.
