Denmark's players celebrate during the penalty shoot-out at the Women's Euro 2017 semifinal soccer match between Denmark and Austria in Breda the Netherlands Thursday Aug. 3 2017

Dutch national team striker Vivianne Miedema spoke to the NOS after the Netherlands were crowned European Champions by beating Denmark 4-2 in the final in Enschede.

Nadia Nadim, Vivianne Miedema, Lieke Martens and Pernille Mosegaard-Harder all scored inside a insane opening 33 minutes.

Denmark took the lead as Nadia Nadim scored from the penalty spot on six minutes after Kika van Es had brought down Sanne Troelsgaard in the box.

The Oranje leveled four minutes later with a quality goal by Miedema, whose first-time finish from the always risky Shanice van de Sanden's cross ended a slick Netherlands move.

This was a historic victory, the first global championship in team history.

"It was an open match, both teams played to win of course", said Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman.

Both nations were competing in their first European final having both made the semifinals four years ago in Sweden, but it was the host nation who were able to go all the way and claim the title with a display of attacking verve and energy.

The success of the Netherlands women's team is in stark contrast to the country's men, who failed to qualify for last year's European Championships in France and are struggling to reach next year's FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation. I have to let this sink in to really be aware of what we have achieved. "Actually Denmark changed it and we continued today".

It was the first time the Dutch had trailed in the tournament, but the setback was temporary.

"It's not easy to play at home, it's so easy to disappoint everybody, but they didn't, they performed so well".
