On a coutume de dire que l'homme est un animal social et qu'il n'est pas fait pour la solitude. A l'inverse, une vie sociale riche, une plus grande connexion sociale, sont associées à un risque réduit de 50% de mort prématurée.

Selon des travaux présentés lors de la convention annuelle de l'Association américaine de psychologie, à Washington, la solitude est en expansion dans tous les pays du monde et tuerait au moins autant que l'obésité.

"En effet, l'isolement social a toujours été utilisé comme une forme de punition".

La seconde méta-analyse, qui regroupait 70 études portant sur 3,4 millions d'individus, principalement en Amérique du Nord, mais aussi en Europe, en Asie et en Australie, avance les mêmes conclusions mais rapporte des faits nouveaux préoccupants: l'isolement social et la solitude constituent des facteurs de risque au moins aussi importants que certains autres facteurs déjà identifiés, comme l'obésité. Ainsi, l'isolement social et la solitude seraient aussi nocives pour la santé que l'obésité. Les chercheurs notent que la solitude affecte le mode de vie. Car une personne isolée aura tendance à moins pratiquer d'acrtivité physique, à fumer plus, et à s'alimenter de façon moins équilibrée. En 2016, des chercheurs de l'université de New York ont constaté qu'une personne seule avait un risque accru de 29 % de souffrir d'une crise cardiaque ou d'une angine de poitrine, et de 32 % de faire un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC). Le travail contribue aussi à cette harmonie mentale.

Le remède proposé par les chercheurs consiste à se préparer psychologiquement à la retraite, de nombreux liens sociaux étant liés au travail. Et ça les managers l'ont bien compris. Rien qu'en France, une personne sur dix est confrontée à la solitude, selon une enquête du Crédoc pour la Fondation de France, publiée en 2016. Plus d'un quart de la population vit seule, alors que la moitié de la population n'est pas mariée.
