Intel plans to build and test 100 self-driving cars this year

Joining the autonomous driving race in top gear, Intel Corporation has completed the $15.3 billion acquisition of Israeli technology company Mobileye NV.

"Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations", said soon-to-be senior vice president of Intel Amnon Shashua in a press release. What better way to show your commitment to self-driving vehicle technology than by building your own fleet, 100 vehicles in total to be exact.

"The combination of Intel and Mobileye will allow Mobiley" s leading computer vision expertise to complement Intel's high-performance computing and connectivity expertise to create automated driving solutions from Cloud to auto.

"Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles."

Intel, which has been expanding beyond its core of computer chipmaking, is keen for its technology to be an engine powering self-driving systems across the spectrum of vehicle makers.

Intel said the vehicles would offer "level 4" autonomy, which under industry standards represents a "high" level of autonomy just below the fully automated level 5.

Apple is now testing its technology in California.

German luxury carmaker Daimler and auto parts supplier Bosch have announced plans to work together to create completely driverless cars in the next few years.

USA vehicle rental giant Avis Budget earlier this year announced it will team up with Waymo on the self-driving cars being tested on Arizona roads.
