Peter Burling is set to have a crack at sailing's triple crown, with the Olympic gold medallist and America's Cup victor having signed with Team Brunel for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race.

There's also speculation that Alex Maloney and Molly Meech who won silver medals in the 49er FX class in Rio are also considering sailing in the round the world race.

Burling: "Round the world ocean racing has always excited me and I'm stoked to be part of Team Brunel on this epic edition". "It seems like good timing and a great opportunity to learn a lot off a pretty experienced team".

Burling will be up against his Team New Zealand teammate Blair Tuke who will be racing for Spanish team Mapfre.

The 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race starts from Alicante, Spain, on October 22 and covers 45,000 nautical miles (83,000 km) around the world, featuring a total of 12 host ports, with Brunel and Mapfre among seven teams confirmed so far.

Should either Burling or Tuke be part of the winning team in the round the world race they would become the first sailor to win the sport's triple crown - the America's Cup, Olympic gold and the round the world title.

Burling likes the feel of his new outfit and says the experience of Bekking and his crew was instrumental to his decision, given his limited blue-water sailing experience. "We have huge respect for each other's skill and talent and we are each other's biggest supporters", says Peter. "I think both of us will learn a lot of skills before the next time we sail together and we'll take on a challenge again together soon". Both teams will start among the favourites. "I look forward to sharing a few stories and beers with him in port".

Burling may have a compatriot on board Team Brunel, with fellow double Olympic medallist Jo Aleh in trials with the Dutch team.

"I've sailed against Blair a lot in the past", Burling said.

Team Brunel were runners-up in 2014-15 under Bekking and have hit the ground running in their preparations for the upcoming race.

Bekking continued: "I see Peter as an exponent of the new talented generation". "Having just toured New Zealand with the America's Cup I got to witness how much Kiwis really do love sailing - and I know they will really get behind the Volvo Ocean Race coming to town".

"It's going to be pretty special to be on board to see Auckland, the City of Sails, welcome an epic race like the Volvo".

"Every race you do you want to win", Burling told reporters in Plymouth.
