Two top Haley aides resign

Amid growing tensions between the USA and North Korea, two key aides to Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley have resigned.

Haley's Chief of Staff Steven Groves resigned, as did her communications director Jonathan Wachtel. Haley responded to the latter's post, tweeting that both were leaving due to family concerns.

The resignations come as Haley heads to Vienna on Thursday to review Iran's nuclear activities with United Nations atomic watchdogs.

Prior to joining Haley's team, Wachtel worked for Fox News Channel as a producer for over a decade, and Groves worked at conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

Haley said both men have "recently encountered family concerns", she wrote on Twitter Wednesday night. "They will always be a part of the team & dear friends".

It's been a tumultuous tenure at the United Nations for Haley, who was appointed by USA president Donald Trump as a political favor not to her - but to the man who wound up replacing her as governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster.

Before serving as Haley's communications director, Wachtel worked as a journalist and producer at Fox News for almost two decades.
