He even said that he respects woman a lot and felt unfortunate about the incident. Hell broke loose after Rajendran, in order to express the extent of dissatisfaction she had with the film Jab Harry met Sejal, compared the film with actor Vijay's Sura. "My opinion is that maligning or making slanderous comments against women should not be made", he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, actor Vijay, now shooting for his film "Mersal", said everybody had a right to criticise films. It is my view that no woman should be spoken of in a demeaning way for any reason or any time. Vijay requested his fans not to hurt woman.

Vijay's appeal comes on the day the Cyber Crime Branch of the Chennai police lodged an FIR against four anonymous Twitter handles and others for the sexual harassment and abuse of TNM Editor-in-Chief Dhanya Rajendran on Twitter.

Tamil superstar Vijay, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Mersal, has asked his fans to not pass derogatory comments against the female journalist, who criticised his film Sura on Twitter.

She said the abusive tweets began on Friday and thereafter on Sunday began an organised slanderous and abusive campaign by people claiming to be Vijay's fans. The 3-4 tweets, spread over a period of six years, were supposedly "evidence" enough for the fans to attack her. Chinmayi Sripaada, who filed a similar complaint against online bullies and harassers back in 2012, took to social media to express her views on this. But after getting almost 63,000 abuse tweets, she had to complain to the police.

Dhanya has received support from several quarters. In fact, DMK working president MK Stalin on Wednesday wrote a strong message condemning the issue on Twitter.
