Looking to improve on last season's 13th-placed finish, Stoke boss Mark Hughes has brought in midfield veteran Darren Fletcher and forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, as well as Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma on loan.

Romelu Lukaku can open his Manchester United account by scoring first against West Ham tomorrow at odds of 5-2. "Clearly, Wayne Rooney has the ability to fill that space", said Hughes, who had a brief spell at Goodison Park towards the end of his playing career. His side face Stoke on Saturday with the Dutch coach welcoming greater prospects, but with a warning his rebuilding process is incomplete.

Everton manager Koeman believes Barkley will leave Goodison Park this summer but insists the club will not be hostage to a deliberately late, undervalued offer for the midfielder.

Ake excelled in a loan spell for Eddie Howe's side last season and the Netherlands global could prove Antonio Conte wrong in allowing him to leave. The additions should make the team much stronger than before.

Ramiro Funes Mori, Yannick Bolasie and Seamus Coleman are long-term absentees while James McCarthy and Aaron Lennon are not yet match fit. The reception they gave me was fantastic.

"A hard game, Stoke City is always a battle", he remarked.

But in Rooney's early Everton outings he has appeared leaden and again unsure of his best position, failing to score in either leg of their Europa League qualifier win against Ruzomberok.

Stoke are likelier to be the rustier of the two sides, given that Everton have already played in two competitive matches this season.

Only Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer (8) have scored more goals on Premier League opening day than Rooney (7).

Everton have confirmed on the club's official website that four first-team players will miss Saturday's Premier League opener against Stoke City, midfielder Muhamed Besic could play a part and that the Toffees may hand six domestic debuts to new signings.

Stoke are embarking on their 10th consecutive Premier League season.
