With top seed Rafael Nadal knocked out in the third round by Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, 19-time grand slam victor Federer is thick in the fight for a return to the top of the ATP list.

Holding to love to clinch the opening set, after breaking in the ninth game, the 19-time grand slam victor did not look back, winning 81 per cent of total points on his first serve.

But he broke Bautista-Agut's serve in the ensuing game and never looked back.

Roger Federer kept his mind strictly on the quarter-final match at hand in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Roberto Bautista Agut on Friday to strengthen his bid for a return to the number one ranking.

Shapovalov will play a semi against another fast-rising young gun: fourth seed Alexander Zverev who beat South African Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-4.

The first signs of the player who beat Rafael Nadal less than 24 hours earlier came in the fifth game when Shapovalov fought off five break points to win his first game, but Mannarino served out the set.

But Shapovalov broke again in the ninth game and clinically served out to the delight of the crowd.

"I actually feel really happy because I know I can play a lot better".

"I think it pays off playing aggressive here in Montreal", Federer said. Haase said it was hard for both players after playing tough three-set matches against seeded players earlier in the week.

Nowhere was Federer's wayward performance better illustrated than in the seventh game, when he squandered three break points at 0-40 to allow Ferrer to take a 5-2 lead.

Both the Rogers Cup and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati are tune-up events for the final Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar, the US Open, which gets under way on August 28. It took a lot of us.

On track for a third Rogers Cup triumph, the Swiss great will meet Haase, who recovered from dropping the first set against Schwartzman to book his first ATP 1000 semi-final berth.

The 30-year-old Haase said he always believed he could be competitive at this level, but he had to overcome a serious knee injury early in his career.

"I have no words, this is unbelievable", the youngster said. "After one-and-a-half years, I got back". It drains you because you know you can do better.
