Guardiola: Man City to rein in spending after record outlay

Upon Gabriel's return from injury, the two at times played together in Pep Guardiola's side, and the 20-year-old forward is expecting their friendly rivalry will bring the best out of each other as well as the team this season.

Defenders Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker and Danilo have all arrived at the Etihad Stadium along with goalkeeper Ederson and midfielder Bernardo Silva to take City's expenditure to £217 million ($281 million, 238 million euros).

It has been another strong showing of City's financial muscle but Guardiola insists the club have only paid market rates and such major rebuilding work is a one-off.

"It is not because I have always done it (won the league title in his second season) that I am going to do it again", Mourinho said. I assure you that. "We needed to do that because four or five players were out of contract".

March believes that the high transfer fees are a reflection of the quality in the league but says Brighton are not intimidated by bigger teams or anxious by the general consensus that they will be relegated after just one season.

"The group of players this season are going to stay here for a long time".

But having witnessed first-hand just how hard it has been for clubs to conduct business this summer, Mourinho says he will not be complaining if his squad stays as it is come 31 August.

"There were so many games at Old Trafford that were 0-0 or 1-1 where they had chances but weren't clinical enough and I think that's ultimately the biggest thing that has to change for Manchester United in the league".

It's a case of crystal balls rather than footballs this morning as the press whip up a Premier League prediction frenzy.

"I hope both of us can help the team and I'm sure both of us are going to be ready to play".

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has reshaped his squad extensively since last season's 11th-place finish. "We are here to win the games and titles".

Craig Burley feels Pep Guardiola's back may be against the wall if he does not win any trophies with Man City this season. I was living my dream and made that big step, which is not common. We have to deal with that and handle that.

In spite of City's lavish summer spending, which has seen the club surpass the £220m barrier, Guardiola anticipates a tough start for the new season.
