Justine Damond's father, John Ruszczyk, choked back tears as he vowed to find justice for his 40-year-old daughter, whom he described as being "ripped from our arms".

Mourners wearing heart-shaped stickers have gathered at a lakefront stage to remember an Australian woman shot and killed by a police officer responding to her 911 call.

Her family and friends have also set up a memorial fund for the social justice causes she believed in.

Many of those gathering at Lake Harriet Park in southwest Minneapolis for the sunset memorial wore blue, Ruszczyk's favorite color. "I don't understand. I should have been on a plane to her wedding (rather than) flying to her funeral".

Damond was engaged to be married in August. Her fiancé, Don Damond, and her father, John Ruszczyk, were among those scheduled to speak at the public memorial.

The search warrant application was filed Thursday by an agent with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Her friends have said the concern Ruszczyk showed that night for a possible assault victim was characteristic of her caring nature.

During a visit to Minneapolis, where Ms Damond was shot, Mr Ruszczyk said: "We should be walking down the street smiling and laughing, But now every step on the foot path is very painful".

The life of 40-year-old Justine Damond (DAY'-mund) will be celebrated Friday night at Lake Harriet Band Shell in southwest Minneapolis.

Lawyers for the killer police officer, Noor, 36, claim he felt he was being ambushed when he pulled the trigger and shot Ms Damond.

As Ms Damond's friends mourn their loss, the police continue to investigate just how rookie police officer Mohamed Noor came to shoot the bride-to-be dead. Immediately afterward, Ruszczyk approached the driver's side window, and Harrity's partner, Mohamed Noor, shot Ruszczyk through the window, Harrity said.

A Native American burning of sage followed this, the ritual is said to ward off bad spirits. He has declined to be interviewed by investigators, and can not be compelled to do so. The memorial will end with a silent walk around Lake Harriet.

Though the officers were wearing body cameras, they did not turn them on before the shooting, and the squad auto camera did not capture the incident, investigators said. Late last month, the Minneapolis Police Department updated its body camera policy to require officers to activate them upon being dispatched.

Damond's shooting death led to a shake-up at the top of the Minneapolis Police Department.
