They were both charged with kidnapping a taxi driver, assaulting him, and robbing him of money, a credit card machine, an iPhone and other items.

A 24-year-old Auckland man has been arrested over the kidnapping and serious assault of a taxi driver in Wellington yesterday.

Two men appeared separately charged with kidnapping a taxi driver in Wellington on the morning of Wednesday, August 9.

Their brief hearing took place behind bars in a secure courtroom in the building's basement, which is reserved for cases where there are security concerns.

The second man was calm during his appearance.

The pair have been remanded in custody and will reappear via video link on 1 September. On Friday morning, police appealed for sightings of a white Toyota Probox, registration FLY984, linked to the kidnapping.

It is believed a third offender was involved and police are "following strong lines of enquiry to locate that person", a police statement said.
