United States fighter jet makes crash landing at Bahrain airport

Authorities say a USA fighter jet has crash landed at Bahrain International Airport, disrupting flights to and from the island nation. The pilot ejected from the aircraft after it ran off the runway and was unharmed.

When this could not be accomplished it made the landing instead at Bahrain International Airport, the US Navy's 5th fleet said in a statement.

Social media pictures of the aircraft showed the grey fighter jet's nose tipped into the air but largely intact.

The fighter had taken off from USS Nimitz, an aircraft carrier on duty in the Gulf and suffered an engine malfunction and diverted to Bahrain.

"Due to the malfunction, the aircraft could not be stopped on the runway and the pilot ejected from the aircraft as it departed the runway".

Airport officials did not respond to requests for comment today.

Bahrain's Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed the incident, saying no injuries occurred.

Bahrain hosts 8,000 U.S. troops, mostly sailors attached to a sprawling based called the Naval Support Activity.

That base oversees some 20 United States and coalition naval vessels in the Gulf providing security and others running anti-piracy patrols.
