UP govt directs Madarsas to hoist tricolour on Aug 15

The Uttar Pradesh Madarsa Shiksha Parishad has directed all Madarsas in the state to unfurl national flag on the occasion of 70th Independence Day. In the past, madarsas were only directed to hoist the national flag and recite the national anthem.

According to the circular, the flag hoisting and recitation of the National Anthem will take place at 8 am.

Students have been asked to sing songs on nationalism and discuss the history of August 15 and the freedom fighters. Some of the activities which have been suggested in the said notice are commemoration of martyrs of Indian freedom struggle, singing of patriotic songs by students, cultural activities based on national integrity and sports programs.

The move holds significance since this is probably the first time that the madrasas have been asked to hold cultural programmes on Independence Day.

The state government has also warned the madrasas that if the directives aren't followed, the state will then withdraw government aid to these institutions.

Defending the directions to madarsas, Minority Affair minister Chaudhary Lakshmi Narayan said, "The madarsas recognised by UP Madarsa Education Board are funded by the state and are expected to celebrate all national festivals, including Independence Day. In order to have a competition among the various madrasas, they need to videograph and the celebrations shall be made and that's an encouragement", he said.
