Wenger praises Giroud after winning start

Arsenal fans have expressed their love for centre-forward Olivier Giroud after he scored the winning goal in the last few minutes of their Premier League opening clash against Leicester City.

Against a plucky Leicester side at a packed and tense Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger's men scored twice in the last 10 minutes - first through substitute Aaron Ramsey before the much-maligned Giroud headed in the victor off Granit Xhaka's corner.

The lead was short lived as Shinji Okazaki restored parity via his head only minutes later and Jamie Vardy slid in to score just before the half-hour mark.

Danny Welbeck levelled for Arsenal, but Vardy's second goal looked to have won it for Leicester until the sensational finale. Giroud had been linked with an exit during the summer, and Wenger admitted he considered allowing his most authentic target man to leave but the 30-year-old resisted the idea.

"I don't know whether it was a lack of concentration or just a lack of game management in the last ten minutes, but you then concede again from a set play in terms of being overpowered". In the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the great days of the recent weeks for me.

"No. It's a determined no", he said.

It was only the second opening day victory in seven seasons for the Gunners who are coming off a torturous campaign that saw them finish outside the Champions League places for the first time in 21 years.

"I'm happy the goals we conceded we can work on together".

Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare was also pleased - even if the Foxes headed back to the East Midlands with nothing to show for their evening's endeavour.

"You want the Premier League to be the best league in the world and I think it has to produce these kind of games to produce interest and quality".

Shakespeare was true to his word and started Riyad Mahrez despite the Algeria global asking to leave the King Power Stadium.

"Obviously I knew that I was going to have a chance so we tried to push", he said.
