One person has died and 19 others were injured when a auto rammed a crowd of people opposing a far-right rally in the USA state of Virginia, police say.

A state of emergency was declared in the city of Charlottesville because of street violence, ahead of a planned march by white nationalists.

The president ignored a reporter's question asking what he has to say to white nationalists who say they support him and commit acts of violence. The crash happened just a few hours after a auto plowed into a crowd of people peacefully protesting against the white nationalist rally. The University of Virginia Medical Center told the New York Times that one person was dead and nineteen injured, although it was not immediately clear if the person died after being hit by the vehicle.

Witnesses said it looked like the driver meant to mow down people.

Videos and pictures of the immediate aftermath showed several people lying on the ground, while others screamed for medics.

President Donald Trump on Saturday blamed "many sides" for the violent clashes between protesters and white supremacists in Virginia and contended that the "hatred and bigotry" broadcast across the country had taken root long before his political ascendancy. There are not "many sides" here, just right and wrong, " Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said on Twitter. He said he thinks removing the statue amounts to erasing history and said the "counter-protesters are crazier than the alt-right". "It has no place in America".

The campaign, started by a Michael Patterson, says the "Anchorage Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) plans on working with Virginia DSA chapters and members to identify those affected by the attack and get them the funds they need".

Very soon after a shooting at an Orlando nightclub in June 2016, Trump tweeted that he was "right on radical Islamic terrorism".

Virginia's governor has declared a state of emergency involving violent clashes between hundreds of protestors in Charlottesville, Va.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides", Trump said, then repeating, "On many sides".

Disturbances began Friday night during a torch-lit march through the University of Virginia before escalating Saturday.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups, said Saturday's "Unite the Right Rally" could mark one of the most significant demonstrations of its kind in decades.

The White House was silent for hours except for a tweet from first lady Melania Trump: "Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let's communicate w/o hate in our hearts". "We are determined to take our country back".

Indian American Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, called on Trump to "denounce what happened this weekend - and the white supremacist hate behind it".

But some of the white nationalists cited Trump's victory as validation for their beliefs, and Trump's critics pointed to the president's racially tinged rhetoric as exploiting the nation's festering racial tension.
