Feds Capture Alleged Gang Member on 'Most Wanted' List

MS-13 gang member Walter Yovany Gomez was captured after a four-year manhunt

FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitive Walter Yovany Gomez was arrested without incident Friday in Woodbridge.

The FBI says that Gomez is a member of the MS-13 gang that has recently received new scrutiny after President Donald Trump vowed to crack down on the worldwide group as part of his administration's immigration policies, following more than a dozen gang-related murders on Long Island.

Gomez, a Honduran native with is in his late 20s or 30s and was in the USA illicitly, is associated in the passing with Julio Matute in Plainfield in May 2011.

According to the FBI, Gomez and another man befriended Matute and spent an evening partying at his house before attacking him as he was preparing to leave for work the next morning.

During a rally in Huntington, West Virginia, earlier this month, President Donald Trump praised law enforcement and immigration officials for cracking down on gang members, particularly MS-13. Gomez and the co-conspirator allegedly struck Matute in the head with a baseball bat, sliced his throat, and stabbed him in the back 17 times with a screwdriver, apparently because Matute was suspected of socializing with a rival gang. His injuries were severe to the point that experts were just ready to distinguish him as a result of his tattoos.

Gomez, who goes by the nickname "Cholo", is accused of killing a fellow MS-13 gang member Julio Matute in Plainfield in 2011.

Gomez is being charged with a violent crime in aid of racketeering.

Gomez' cohort, who was also an MS-13 member, was caught and convicted.

Gomez - a Honduran citizen who was in the USA illegally - was placed on the most-wanted list in April 2017.

After a long manhunt of an alleged MS-13 gang member, Federal Bureau of Investigation officials announced Saturday they had finally apprehended Walter Yovany Gomez. It is not known if anybody will claim it, or how exactly Gomez was apprehended.
