No Easy Military Options in North Korea

Mattis says any action by North Korea would be grossly overmatched by the US, and that Pyongyang would lose any arms race or conflict it started.

Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday warned North Korea to stop its pursuit of nuclear weapons or face the end of Pyongyang's regime and "the destruction of its people".

Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was not going to get away with his "horrific" comments and disrespecting America.

The official, who spoke to Newsweek on the condition of anonymity, said war game scenarios conducted by the US and South Korea indicated that substantial time would be required to move military assets for an attack on the state.

But asked whether the United States was ready if North Korea did commit a hostile act, he responded: 'We are ready'. "But at the same time, our defenses are robust" and ready to take on any threat posed by the North Korean regime, Mr. Mattis said.

"The best way to show how (the threat) is widely gauged, is to look at last weekend when the UN Security Council voted unanimously to characterize this as a North Korean threat to the world's community", he said.

"I think that the President again - as commander in chief - I think he felt it necessary to issue a very strong statement directly to North Korea", Tillerson said.

Matthew Rycroft told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY that the USA and UK have been very clear in demanding a halt to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

"My first order as president was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal".

An attack would require more military assets than the USA now has stationed in the Korean peninsula and east Asia. "We want to make sure that we don't just retaliate".

USA defense and national security officials have repeatedly touted the capabilities of the US missile defense shield over the last several weeks, in the wake of a pair of successful test launches by North Korea of its latest intercontinental ballistic missile in July.

"I was not elected, the American people elected the president", he said.
