"North Korea is a serious thing", Ellison, D-Minn., told attendees at the NetrootsNation conference during a question-and-answer session.

Trump doubled down Thursday, saying his previous bold statements might not have been "strong enough" for Kim Jong Un, whose regime announced a plan to fire four missiles near the USA island territory of Guam in response to the White House's bold rhetoric.

The remarks drew outrage, and in an interview after the panel with the Washington Post, Ellison went into damage control.

"You have this guy [Trump] making bellicose threats against somebody else who has very little to lose over there", Ellison said.

"It's tailor-made for somebody to misuse", he added. "Nobody loves a peaceful solution more than President Trump, that I can tell you..."

It prompted Trump to warn that he would unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea if it did not stop its threats to the US.

"I think that the president unfortunately has elevated Kim Jong-Un now", McCaskill said at a town hall meeting Friday, the Daily Journal Online reported.

The United Nations Security Council, with encouragement from the USA, voted unanimously at the beginning of August to impose new sanctions against North Korea in retaliation for the regime's recent intercontinental ballistic missile tests.

Things are quickly heating up between the US and North Korea, and there are no signs it will slow down after the Pentagon said Friday the military stands ready to "fight tonight", if necessary.

Following that vote, reports indicated that the country has developed a miniaturized nuclear warhead capable of fitting on a missile.
