President Trump to send envoys to Middle East to discuss peace

Therefore, after various meetings among Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly, National Security Advisor LTG H.R. McMaster, Senior Advisor Jared Kushner, Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategy Dina Powell and U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, the President will soon be sending Mr. Kushner, Mr. Greenblatt and Ms. Powell to the region to continue discussions with regional partners about how best to support the peace effort.

Mr. Trump, according to the senior official, has asked that the discussions focus on the path to substantive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, combatting extremism, addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and determining economic steps to ensure a peace deal offers security, stability and prosperity for the region.

The Trump administration eventually waded into the escalating crisis last month, attempting to sketch out a solution to the impasse along with Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan, the official custodian of the compound.

The delegation will also meet will leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, and Egypt in addition to Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government.

After the incident, metal detectors were put in place around the Al Aqsa mosque, considered the third holiest site to Muslims, enraging Palestinian worshipers who refused to enter, inspiring mass protests and violent clashes that killed five Palestinian youths.

"President Trump has previously noted that achieving an enduring Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement will be hard but he remains optimistic that peace is possible".

"While the regional talks will play an important role, peace between Israelis and Palestinians can only be negotiated directly between the two parties and the United States will continue working closely with the parties to make progress towards that goal", the statement continues.

Greenblatt tweeted shortly following the White House announcement confirming the visit saying that he looked forward to returning to the Middle East, adding that the President is "optimistic".
