Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sat on a cooler next to the bench during the playing of the national anthem in the team's preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

Marshawn Lynch sits during the National Anthem before tonight's Raiders/Cardinals pre-season game.

Why Lynch chose to sit hasn't yet been revealed, but it comes almost one year after Colin Kaepernick began a protest of the oppression of people of color by sitting and kneeling during the playing of the national anthem during the 2016 season.

"I'd rather see him take a knee than stand up, put his hands up and get murdered", Lynch said. When Kaepernick sat last summer, it didn't take long for the protesting to become not only an National Football League topic of discussion, but a country-wide discussion that was had.

Lynch has talked to the media once since he came out of retirement and was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last spring, and that was in the offseason program.

"And I mean, if you're really not a racist, then you're going to see what he's done, what he's doing (not) as a threat to America, but just addressing a problem that we have". "That's a non-issue for me", Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said after the game, adding he was unaware Lynch had planned to sit during the anthem.

Kaepernick remains an unsigned free agent.
