The minister also appealed to the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to initiate a dialogue with the stakeholders to resolve the issue.

Asked whether any decision had been taken on relaxing the shutdown on Independence Day, Dewan said, "It will be decided very soon after discussing it with all the hill parties and GJM president Bimal Gurung".

"I am hopeful the hill parties leading the movement will attend this meeting and help find a possible road map for Gorkhaland statehood". Violence can never be a solution to any problem, ? The GMCC, led by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), said it had urged the home minister to start the process for creating a separate state. "In the meantime, the state government should restore all civil supplies and also restore Internet services, Cable TV and local channels", the statement said. "I am concerned about the developments in Darjeeling, the loss of valuable lives and the sufferings of people over the past 60 days, which pains me immensely", said Mr. Singh. "In a democracy, solutions are always found through restraint, mutual dialogue and within the legal ambit", he said. He said a solution should be found, "keeping in mind the national interest, as well as in the interest of our Gorkha brothers and sisters, who are fearless and large hearted people and have contributed immensely to nation building".

Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and Union Minister and Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia were also present at the two-hour-long meet. "We urged him to start the process for (creation of) a separate state".

The GMCC had sought the central government's intervention to break the logjam.

Two vehicles were set ablaze by the Gorkhaland agitators in the Darjeeling hills on Wednesday amidst special security arrangements as the indefinite shutdown called by the GJM entered its 56th day.

Barring medicine shops, all other shops, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed in the hills.
