Trent Murphy Suffers Knee Sprain, Leaves Game

Murphy is entering his fourth season with the Redskins after being the team's top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Stanford.

Trent Murphy's 2017 season was set to start with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy.

The Redskins will be without a top linebacker for the 2017 season.

He was injured with 4:59 left in the first quarter of Thursday's 23-3 preseason opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Redskins are already thin at outside linebacker, where Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith are now listed atop the team's depth chart. Washington's outside linebacker corps is now thin, at least currently.

Murphy, 26, was second on the Redskins with nine sacks a year ago, trailing only Ryan Kerrigan.

A former starter during his first two seasons, Murphy flourished as an off-the-bench rush man in 2016.

Rookie Ryan Anderson, Lynden Trail and Chris Carter will each see extended playing time in the absence of veterans. The latter has missed two full seasons and still hasn't played for the Redskins despite signing in 2015.
