As of 5.50am (GMT) there were no reports of casualties or damage following the quake, which struck at a depth of 41 miles.

The magnitude 6.5 quake struck west of the island of Sumatra earlier today, according to the United States Geological Survey.

A strong natural disaster struck off the coast of southern Sumatra in Indonesia on Sunday, causing panic as it was felt several hundred kilometres away in Singapore.

Bengkulu resident Neng Hasnah said the quake felt very strong for a few seconds, forcing her and her family members to flee her house.

He said officials were checking if there were any casualties or damage. "Tremors felt in Lor 1 Toa Payoh at around 11.10am", Andrew Tan told Channel NewsAsia through WhatsApp.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
