The London airport said summer getaways meant passenger numbers had soared, with Heathrow bringing in 7.53m passengers in July (edging up 1.2 per cent on the same time last year), averaging 243,000 passengers every day, City AM reports.

The UK's biggest and busiest airport said it welcomed 7.53 million passengers in July, up 1.2% compared with the same time previous year, and breaking all monthly records.

Much of that growth was thanks to American Airlines, which boosted cargo volumes by 44%, spurring an uptick in trade with North America.

Trade through Heathrow climbed at the fastest rate ever recorded at the UK's largest port - up 15% to 143,000 tonnes in July.

Domestic destinations in Britain saw five percent passenger growth on the back of recently launched Flybe flights to Scotland.

Chief executive John Holland-Kaye said: "Britain's global gateway is hard at work this summer holiday season - July was the best month in Heathrow's history".

A report by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ranked the airport "good" in recognition of its performance on accessibility over the last 12 months.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling added: "It is encouraging to see the overwhelming majority of United Kingdom airports providing a good service for passengers with a disability, but I am determined to push the aviation industry to do more".

The CAA report said, "We acknowledge that Heathrow has certain challenges, in particular long walking distances and high numbers of passengers that need assistance at the airport, which puts pressure on it to deliver a consistent and high quality assistance service".

Manchester, East Midlands and Exeter were the other airports where attention to accessibility was found to be lacking.

Of the airports reviewed, six were rated "very good", 20 rated as "good" and four rated as "poor".

The British Government's Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, said: "It is vital that everyone can access and use transport services, and the CAA is doing excellent work around this".

The report also shows that the number of air passengers with a disability requesting extra help continues to grow significantly, reaching over three million journeys in 2016 - a rise of over 66% since 2010.
