Assam Fresh flood creates havoc 3.5 lakh people in 15 districts hit

Rainfall forecast issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the next 5 days indicate that Heavy to very heavy rainfall are very likely to occur in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bhutan.

For last four days, heavy rains had disturbed routine life in states like Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

Following the devasting flood, around 64,000 people are homeless and forced them to take shelter in the relief camps set up by the districts administration.

Floods have ravaged Assam since April, uprooting over 25 lakh people in 29 districts and leaving 76 people dead. Total crop area of over one lakh hectare hectares has been inundated so far across these districts.

Armed forces and disaster relief forces, engaged in relief and rescue operations, evacuated 2,615 stranded people.

The first wave of floods that ended mid-July had killed 84, some due to landslides and electrocution in flooded areas. Four people have died in floods in Assam in past 24 hours.

The Brahmaputra was flowing above the red mark across its 680-km length in the state, and with eight other tributaries overflowing, embankments have been washed away in several districts.

In Agartala, the capital of Tripura, almost 20,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps.

Nine rivers - the Brahmaputra, Buridehing, Subansiri, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Puthimari, Beki, Gaurang and Sankosh - are flowing above their danger levels.

Floods also wreaked havoc in the river island of Majuli forcing the affected to flee to highlands. Road communication in several parts of the state has been disrupted due to landslides.

The present government therefore worked vigorously to fix and strengthen the embankments before the onset of monsoon and completed the works of 88 numbers of embankments in the state.

While many rivers in Alipurduar Divisions are in spate, N. F. Railway authorities are keeping a close watch and continuously monitoring the situation nearby railway bridges in the entire division and taking all precautionary measures for safe train running.
