U.S. stocks end lower after comments from Trump

But U.S. stocks regained some lost ground, despite Trump's comments Friday that U.S. weapons are "locked and loaded", ready to respond if North Korea acts "unwisely".

The S&P 500 index had its biggest one-day drop in nearly three months on Thursday as investors fled riskier assets, with technology stocks leading the charge, in response to an increasingly aggressive exchange of threats between the United States and North Korea.

Stocks are falling in midday trading on Wall Street, led by declines in technology companies and banks.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.4% to 2438.21, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 204.69 points, or 0.9%, to 21,844.01. The risk-off tone triggered by the increase in tension between the United States and North Korea yesterday picked back up during today's U.S. session.

The Footsie is likely to take cues from the U.S., where stocks retreated last night after President Donald Trump warned North Korea, saying that threats will be "met with fire and fury".

Travel website operator Priceline fell 7.26 per cent, weighing the most on the S&P and the Nasdaq, following a disappointing forecast.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 2.25 percent from 2.26 percent late Tuesday.

About 6.48 billion shares changed hands on US exchanges on Wednesday compared with the 6.16 billion average for the last 20 sessions. Australia was off 1.2 percent.

In oil, Brent crude was dragged 0.5% lower at 52.46 U.S. dollars a barrel despite Opec forecasting increased demand for oil next year.

The major averages all closed in positive territory, although the tech-heavy Nasdaq outperformed its counterparts. On the Nasdaq, 1,462 issues rose and 1,227 fell.

Investors are losing enthusiasm for Canada's banking stocks as a slowdown in the country's housing market dents banks' growth prospects, with insurance companies seen as a better bet to benefit from higher interest rates. Natural gas jumped 10 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $2.99 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The Russian dollar-traded index RTS was down 1.49 percent, and ruble-traded MICEX fell 1.29 percent by midday. European stocks were facing the worst week in nine months (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/european-stocks-face-worst-week-in-9-months-on-us-north-korea-tensions-2017-08-11) on U.S.

MARKETS OVERSEAS: In Europe, Germany's DAX fell 1.1 percent, while France's CAC 40 slid 1.4 percent. Silver gained 14 cents to $16.39 an ounce. The contract fell 97 cents, or 2 per cent, to close at $48.59 a barrel on Thursday.

South Korea's Kospi sank 1.7 per cent to 2,319.83 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.8 per cent to 26,946.81. The euro slid to $1.1732 from $1.1752.
