The Giants (46-70) are almost 35 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and the Nationals (68-45) are 15 games ahead in the National League East after a 3-2 win on Thursday at home against the Miami Marlins. Giants manager Bruce Bochy realizes the situation Stratton faced.

Manager Dusty Baker spoke this week about the importance of new players fitting well into the Washington Nationals' clubhouse in the middle of the season.

Edwin Jackson, the Washington starter and victor, said, "You hope for the best".

There has been no update on Harper's injury.

Jackson got the nod last Saturday in place of Gio Gonzalez (paternity list), overcoming a four-run first inning to work four more clean frames in a 7-4 setback at the Chicago Cubs.

Washington won the game 3-1. And they won't have a rested starter to take the ball on Wednesday. Additionally, catcher Pedro Severino was added to the Nationals' roster from Triple-A Syracuse as the 26th man for Sunday's doubleheader vs. the San Francisco Giants. He is among the National League's leaders in batting average, home runs and RBIs this season.

The injury to Harper opens up playing time in the outfield but would present a hard challenge if he's not ready by the start of the postseason.

Joe Panik hit a solo homer off Jackson in the first inning to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Brandon Drury's two-run double keyed a four-run sixth inning that broke up Jon Lester's pitching duel with Patrick Corbin, and Arizona ended a three-game losing streak by beating Chicago.

It was easy to assume that Harper was gone for the season, and it was just as easy to start worry about when he would be back in 2018.

Despite the horrific accident, Harper did manage to walk around the club house following the game. The good thing is he's young and strong.

"You're just thinking, 'Please, Lord, don't let it be serious, '" Baker said.

Harper has been on the disabled list only twice in his career: In 2013, he missed 31 games with left-knee bursitis, and in 2014, he missed 57 games after having surgery on his left thumb.
