Police in Barcelona have said that several people were injured after a van crashed into crowds in the Las Ramblas area of the city centre.

"Huge collision on Las Ramblas in Barcelona by an individual driving a van, many injuries", a statement said.

Authorities in Barcelona are asking people to avoid the Ramblas area, which is popular with tourists.

It's now unknown if the incident is terrorism-related, however using a vehicle to run down people has become the staple attack of the Islamic State.

A local media outlet is reporting two armed men entered a restaurant, but the report has not been confirmed.

El pais newspaper reports that the driver of the vehicle has fled on foot after mowing down dozens people.

Metro and train stations have been asked to close, according to reports, and emergency services have warned people not to go to the Placa Catalunya in the heart of the city. "Suddenly everyone starts screaming and running and falling over each other and crying, so clearly I started running too", she said.
