The open-roof performance auto segment will soon see the arrival of the next-generation BMW Z4, The new 2018 BMW Z4 is set to debut in concept form at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California on August 17, 2017. The diffuser is made from carbon fiber, as you'd expect on a concept.

The Concept Z4 has classic roadster design cues such as a long wheelbase, a low-slung and stretched silhouette and a compact rear end.

So it's over to Adrian van Hooydonk, senior VP BMW Group design, and his team to point out for us the 10 elements of the new design of which they are most proud...

Some interesting details about both the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra emerged from an internal BMW coding sheet revealed at, which looks to be legit. Those 20-inch two-tone, five twin-spoke wheels are a flawless match for the muscular fenders.

It's been designed first and foremost to be a driver's auto and this is echoed within the cockpit where the passenger side features the same hue as the outside of the Z4 but the driver's side has its own black colour scheme, again focussing on the driver.

Inside, the driver-focused cockpit is blacked out in contrast to the passenger-side's orange highlights, while the digital displays for the instrument cluster and multimedia system are parallel. No word on whether it'll keep the current Z4's weighty folding tin top, or return to the Z3's canvas.

A head-up display is also included, while all in-car controls are grouped by function, contributing to the cabin's minimalist approach.

The fact that the new Z4 and Supra share a common root does raise the prospect of a hybrid powertrain option too, and BMW could make an M version of the Z4 with the 425bhp lump from the M3. "This is total freedom on four wheels". "From the dynamic-looking front to the striking flanks to the clean-cut tail end, a few lines and the subtle interplay between surfaces are enough to generate a sense of power and emotion". Speaking of which, the production vehicle is rumored to arrive early next year - perhaps at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Range-topping versions may run the turbocharged six-cylinder engine from the BMW M2 - so the Z4 performance flagship could be good for 272kW/465Nm.
