All other UEFA games will stream live on Turner's upcoming streaming service.

The service, expected next year in the US, has signed up European soccer with the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The new service won't get Turner's televised coverage of Major League Baseball, the March Madness men's college basketball tournament and National Basketball Association games, including the All-Star Game.

In an interview, Turner President David Levy said that in addition to premium content, the sports service could also potentially include niche sports that do not now have a way to reach avid fans.

Said Lenny Daniels, president, Turner Sports: "We believe world [soccer] is one of the most impactful growth properties in the U.S. Our shared vision with UEFA has led to the flawless opportunity to leverage the reach of Turner as we establish deeper connections with fans, while simultaneously creating new business ventures for our company".

Turner's UEFA Champions League coverage will include four live telecasts each week throughout September to early December - Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1pm and 3pm EST. In addition, Turner will televise the UEFA Super Cup on TBS or TNT, which pits the Champions League victor against the Europa League victor. "These highly-anticipated matches and supplemental original programming will be a key foundation for our latest direct to consumer business sports offering, as well as coveted content for Bleacher Report and our leading television networks".

The move may telegraph ambitions from Turner, that owns Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS and CNN, to expand into new digital platforms to help its content reach more people, as the wider TV industry appears to be partitioning. According to the release, B/R will also "serve as a portal to the OTT service and the live UEFA matches offered through the new platform".

The streaming service will give fans additional UEFA matches beyond the ones shown on Turner's cable TV channels TBS, TruTV and TNT. "Our shared vision with UEFA has led to the ideal opportunity to leverage the reach of Turner as we establish deeper connections with fans, while simultaneously creating new business ventures for our company".

Turner's sports service would mark its third online streaming product in the last 15 months.

Numerous biggest headlines in the cable-cutting world over the last few years have been deals between tech firms or streaming services and sports leagues.
