Zverev's run comes to an end as Nadal reaches last 16

From decline to rebirth

From decline to rebirth

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev's 10-match win streak was halted by U.S. teen wild card Frances Tiafoe.

Rafael Nadal booked his place in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters as he swept aside Frenchman Richard Gasquet at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Ohio. The 31-year-old Spaniard has a 14-0 career ATP record against Gasquet.

With Roger Federer and Andy Murray both withdrawing from Cincinnati, Nadal is guaranteed a return to the world No. 1 ranking next Monday. Nadal has won their three prior meetings, most recently in April's Monte Carlo final.

"It's something fantastic, back-to-back weeks", said Zverev, who handed Federer only his third loss of the year.

"I am in the top 10 now and I feel like I'm playing the right tennis, well enough tennis to be there", he said. "When I arrive the days I lose one of these things, I gonna do nothing".

All the components of his game, including a big serve and a great backhand, soon started to trouble the very best - A win over then world number three Federer during last year's Halle Open was a great example.

Unloading on his favored forehand and extending rallies with exceptional court coverage, the 19-year-old American defeated Zverev for the first time following straight-sets losses at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.

Mental toughness has always been associated as an important trait amongst successful sportspeople, something which Zverev demonstrated in abundance against Wawrinka, coming from a break down to clinch the deciding set.

For the match, the 20-year-old German struck 12 aces but also double-faulted a whopping seven times. I am a very lucky person that I can choose when I want to stop, so that's the real thing. I think I can do it, because I have been practicing well.

"I loved watching Denis play", Federer said.

Today, Tiafoe was in no mood to play the waiting game. When Zverev sent a forehand long, Tiafoe screamed with delight.

"I'm happy to be into the third round", Muguruza said.

"I have been in that position more than all these players that are out now". I am the only one of these top players that I miss a lot of important tournaments in my career, no?

"That's why I was extremely joyful. But the only thing that you can do when these kinds of things happen is accept and keep going", he added. Ranked seventh in the world, the German can hope for the best at US Open.

Barty faces former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, a 6-2, 6-4 victor against Russia's Elena Vesnina.

Tiafoe converted six of nine break-point chances, including two breaks in the final set. She faces USA wildcard, Sloane Stephens, next.

USA ninth seed Venus Williams downed compatriot Alison Riske 6-2, 6-0 to book a second-round match with Australian qualifier Ashleigh Barty. "It's really exciting to have my first top-10 win", Barty said.

'Just to be back to that position makes me happy and of course is going to be an emotional moment for me'.
