His reward is a new deal which runs until June 2019 - with the option of a further 12 months.

'It's great and long may it continue, ' Ward said of playing at Turf Moor.

The former Bohemians ace was thrilled with his contract, saying: "I'm delighted to have signed".

But, after the 29-year-old starred in Burnley's shock 3-2 win over champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Dyche offered his thoughts on why the midfielder shone. "It's just great to be part of a club like this at the minute and hopefully we can have another successful season", Ward told Burnley's official website.

Injury meant the left-back was restricted to just nine top-flight appearances in his first season at Turf Moor and he again had to be patient at the start of the following campaign.

Twelve months ago the Clarets seemed to have pulled off a significant coup when they signed Defour, who was once admired by Manchester United, from Anderlecht upon their return to the top flight.

The 29-year-old Belgium worldwide has remained in Lancashire, though, and on Saturday he starred in the win over champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

After firing in a stunning volley against champions Chelsea last weekend Ward celebrated with a contract extension on Monday.

He said: "There's no guarantees but he looks like he's fitter, he's adapted better, he understands the tempo of the game better and that it's physically demanding, particularly here; they've got some very powerful players, they're a big, athletic side".

"I was delighted - and Vokesy as well with two fantastic goals - and, all-in-all, we were just happy with the result". I think he's mentally adapting as well.

"We put in a great performance and we have to be very proud of what we did". He's taken it on'.
