Ford China's Zotye Auto plan JV to build electric vehicles

If you want to build cars in China as a foreign automaker, you must first partner up with a local manufacturer. "Electric vehicles will be a big part of the future in China, and Ford wants to lead in delivering great solutions to customers". Overall, Ford is aiming to make sure that 70 percent of the cars its offers in China are electric vehicles by 2025. The automaker's electric vehicle models are usually sold through the Zotye Zandu brand, which offers small electric auto and hatchback models.

"The potential to launch a new line of all-electric vehicles in the world's largest auto market is an exciting next step for Ford in China", Peter Fleet, Ford group vice president and president, Ford Asia Pacific, said in a statement.

A day after we reported on Ford potentially going "all-in" on all-electric vehicles under new leadership, the American automaker announced a new expansion of its all-electric vehicle lineup.

Ford said Tuesday it would give additional details about the brand, products and production numbers at a later date pending a definitive agreement between the companies. It plans to introduce 13 new electrified vehicles in the next five years, including an all-electric SUV to be sold in Asia, North America and Europe.

Ford has two JVs set up with other automakers including Changan Automobile and Jiangling Motors, and normally that's the upper limit for joint ventures allowed by Chinese industry regulators.

Zotye and Ford will create a new brand for the JV.

Looking to China for its first EVs could be a smart move for the company that is stuck playing catch up with long-time rival General Motors Co.

Focusing on the market for electric vehicles in China leverages the country's position as the world's largest market for EVs due to government incentives aimed at curbing China's massive air quality issues.
