S.Korea, US begin annual military drills

Just one day before the United States and South Korea are scheduled to engage in their annual military exercises, known as the Ulchi Freedom Guardian, North Korea issued its newest threat, stating that the USA will be "adding fuel to fire" by moving ahead with the planned war games.

"The situation on the Korean peninsula has plunged into a critical phase due to the reckless north-targeted war racket of the war maniacs".

The latest missile threat from North Korea comes ahead of joint military drills between the United States and South Korea.

But others say it's likely North Korea is only using the military exercises as an excuse to act out, and, according to Lee, it could even embolden Kim to try to further bully or even blackmail the USA and South Korea "again and again".

In a commentary carried by the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the North warned of an "uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war" on the peninsula, which would entangle the U.S. mainland. State media reported that leader Kim Jong-Un would assess the US' next move before giving launch orders. his was a reaction to US President Donald Trump's comments that his country will respond to any further threats with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

North and South Korea are technically still at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a truce, not a peace treaty. "We can do these things quietly without suggesting you're reducing our opposition to North Korea's nuclear program".

Adm. Harry Harris, chief of the Pacific Command (PACOM), said it's more effective to use diplomacy, not military action that may involve a preemptive strike against Pyongyang, according to a press pool report.

North Korea's rapid progress in developing nuclear weapons and missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland has fuelled a surge in tension.

"If North Korea provokes again, it will face with much harsher sanction and won't stand it in the end".

It described North Korea as the "strongest possessor" of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of striking the USA mainland from anywhere. North Korea has termed the decision to hold the exercise a "catastrophe".

Just last week, Pyongyang said it had finalized a plan to fire four missiles toward the USA territory of Guam.

Meanwhile the USA has reduced the number of troops participating in the joint exercise but insists it's not due to the threat, but more a need of fewer personnel. Approximately 17,500 USA troops will take part, with about 3,000 coming from off-peninsula.
