GCSE overhaul means results are 'incomparable to previous years'

It's GCSE day – results as we get them…

The new grades were part of a package of reforms by former education secretary Michael Gove, created to toughen up syllabuses and to cut down on the number of students getting A*s by splitting it between the two highest grades, eight and nine.

Until this year schools have been ranked on the number of pupils gaining at least five A*-C grades, including English and maths.

The new courses are created to be more challenging for pupils.

A comparison of this year's exam timetables with those of students studying a similar set under the old system shows this year's cohort face longer hours spent in exam halls.

SCHOOL pupils across the United Kingdom will be getting their GCSE results tomorrow and making vital decisions about their future.

Exam boards will use statistics to make sure that roughly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 7 and above as the amount of pupils who received a grade A and above in 2017, and so on.

The new courses will be graded from 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade instead of A*.

This year students will get a mixture of A* to G grades and 9 to 1 grades on their exam certificates.

"The reforms he introduced, and that this Government have ploughed ahead with, have caused unnecessary levels of workload and stress for students and teachers alike".

And it is hoped the new system will bring England up to the standard of education in other countries.

Under the new system, maths has increased from two to three papers, and English language from one to two papers.

The middle grades, 6s, 5s and 4s are about a B and C, and 2s and 1s will be E, F and G. The DfE's decision to label a 4 as a "standard pass" and a 5 as a "strong pass" may not have helped - although a 4 means that pupils will not be forced to resit the exams in English and maths while they remain in education. In addition, a Grade C* will be introduced and aligned with the Grade 5.

A school's progress 8 score, which is used to measure school performance, will not be affected by the new thresholds because it looks at the progress pupils have made during their time at the school rather than overall grades.

From this September, learners will start to study new CCEA GCSEs.

The new exams have only been sat in England, further accentuating the divergence in education systems between it and Wales and Northern Ireland since devolution.
