Interior Secretary Zinke to make Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante recommendation Thursday

McSally asking for preservation of national monuments in Arizona

Trump's review of the more than two dozen treasured national monuments could result in recommendations to remove their "national monument" status. So far, Zinke has recommended no change to five monuments in addition to Sand to Snow, and issued an interim report recommending that Bears Ear National Monument's boundaries be reduced.

"As Montanans know, we rely on those public lands for most of our recreation activities".

Trump signed an executive order in late April instructing Zinke to review any national monument created since January 1, 1996, that spans at least 100,000 acres.

U.S. Representative Martha McSally sent a letter to U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to take stakeholders' input and public comments into account before making recommendations to rescind, reduce, or alter several of Arizona's National Monuments.

National monuments aren't statues - they are federally owned lands and waters that have historic or scientific significance. "If President Trump and Secretary Zinke don't listen, then the courts and the voters will teach them that our public lands are not industry playthings to dispose of as they see fit".

In advance of the August 24 deadline for Secretary Zinke to make his recommendations to the president, millions of Americans have called on him to keep our national monuments protected. In 2014, Environment America collected more than 11,000 hand signed petitions in New Mexico while holding events with ranchers and parents and engaging students to support the creation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.

Over 2.8 million comments were submitted to Interior during the public comment period and an analysis of 1.3 million comments publicly available on regulations.gov found that 99.2 percent opposed Trump's executive order, with respondents mentioning a wide variety of concerns.
