"You should be ashamed", Kislyak declared, "because CNN is the company that keeps on pointing to this allegation".

Kislyak, 66, served as Russia's envoy to the USA between 2008 and last week and spent his career as a diplomat, spanning both the Cold War and the Russian Federation since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Earlier this month it emerged that campaign adviser George Papadopoulos tried several times to broker meetings with the Kremlin, but was rebuffed by Trump officials who voiced concerns over the proposed sit-downs, according to documents handed over to congressional investigators and reported on by The Washington Post.

When asked about allegations that Kislyak was a spy during his time in Washington and attempted to recruit members of the Trump administration, he said it was "nonsense" and called out CNN for reporting on the story.

Kislyak also pointed to former FBI Director James Comey's statements to push back against the allegations.

Leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee said last month that they were negotiating private appearances for Donald Trump Jr. and Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman.

The interview concluded with Kislyak refusing to say if he had "lost faith" in President Trump's ability to lift sanctions on Russian Federation.

"I understand that. You said you've got no secret", Chance said.

"I've said everything I wanted", Kislyak said.

"Im not sure that I heard anything that would be secret", Kislyak said about his meeting with Trump. "It's not going to be wished away, it's going to stay and it's going to spoil ability of both countries to resume a normalcy in our relations".
