- Spain's 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta beat Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 6-2 to reach his first grand slam singles semi-final. He will emerge from the bottom half of a draw decimated by non-starters, withdrawals and upsets. Making his second week debut at a Grand Slam, Schwartzman beat 16th seed Lucas Pouille in four sets to reach the last eight.

Schartzman, at 5ft 7in (1.70m), was the shortest Slam quarter-finalist since same-height Peruvian Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open.

Pablo Carreno Busta is into the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

One big factor in this match could be fatigue. Schwartzman, who packs a big punch for a player of his stature, frequently worked his way into positions of strength but all too often failed to capitalise on his chances.

- The Finnish-Aussie duo, who won the Australian Open, have yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows.

Again the Spaniard started the third well, breaking for a 2-0 advantage, and Schwartzman had no answers.

Another potential advantage for Carreno Busta is that he is the more powerful of the two, and may be able to dictate play, though the Spaniard must be careful not to overpress and make too many unforced errors.

Carreno Busta captured the first set in 38 minutes, broke in the ninth game and held again to take the second. He will face No. 17 Sam Querrey or No. 28 Kevin Anderson in the semifinals. "It's something that I always dreamed about but something I never thought was going to arrive here". I tried to be focused all the time, Diego is a fighter. Diego is a fighter. "You need to be aggressive all the time and try to dominate the points".

"It would be fantastic to play him in the final", Carreno Busta said of Nadal.

"It's very exciting to be in the semi-finals".

Wednesday's quarter-finals will see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal attempt to set up their long-awaited semi-final showdown here.

Along with fellow quarterfinalist Juan Martin del Potro, Schwartzman has ignited a passionate Argentinian following.

Jamie Murray and his Brazilian partner, Bruno Soares, went out in the quarter-finals of the doubles, losing 6-1, 6-2 to the Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer and the Romanian Horia Tecau in just 62 minutes.
