Brace for impact: Packing 130 miles per hour winds, Irma poised to hit Florida

Hurricane Irma weakened to a Category 1 storm early Monday after it whipped through southwest Florida and left almost 4 million customers without power.

The storm slammed the Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning at 9 a.m. before weakening to a tropical storm on Monday morning.

Hurricane Irma's powerful center crossed the Florida Keys and tore into the state's Gulf Coast, downing trees, hurling street signs and debris, and knocking the power out to hundreds of thousands of residents throughout the state.

Weaker but still massive, Hurricane Irma as a Category 1 storm is still lashing Florida's west coast as it churns northwest Monday morning.

Darby says the Edisto Beach is "under water", with power lines and trees down.

In the USA, where it made landfall in Florida state on Sunday, has caused heavy flooding, left about 10 dead and about 6.5 million households without electricity.

- More than 6.2 million electric customers are without power in Florida, Gov. Rick Scott's office said Monday.

Tropical storm warnings were are in effect for the Lowcountry of SC.

The storm, which forced the biggest evacuation in Florida's history. has killed at least 28 people since it began its rampage in the Caribbean.

Irma was at one point the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, with winds up to 185 miles per hour (298 kph).

The hurricane was responsible for at least 26 deaths, including 10 in Cuba, as it passed through Caribbean island nations. Some 900,000 customers lost power in Georgia.

The flooding could continue for about a week as the storm surge persists and tides rise and fall, authorities said. Rains and storm surge also flooded coastal areas in Georgia and SC.

At least nine deaths in the USA are now attributed to Irma, some hit by falling trees or tree limbs and one killed in a storm-related auto accident.

Much of the state's east and west coasts remained vulnerable on Monday to storm surges, when hurricanes push ocean water dangerously over normal levels.

- Two tornadoes touched down in Brevard County, Florida, destroying mobile homes in their path, officials said.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Sunday the president also spoke with the governors of Alabama, Georgia and SC.

Ocean water pushed onshore from Tropical Storm Irma is coming over the Battery in downtown Charleston at high tide.

Many people in shelters have already left, but Mayfield urged people to stay sheltered until further notice.
