Miami Beach Mayor In His Office As Hurricane Irma Lashes Florida CBSNews

The hurricane, which weakened to a Category Two as it headed north along the east coast of Florida toward the city of Naples packing winds of 110 miles (177 kilometers) an hour, killed three people when it struck the southern Keys island chain as a more powerful Category Four.

Anyone in a building in the area of Northeast 3rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard was urged to stay in the building but away from any wall or window facing the crane.

City of Miami fire officials said crews couldn't mobilize to address the cranes until the winds calmed down. "We will have a crew over to secure the crane as soon as the weather permits". The building was still in tact despite the crane's failure.

Many were questioning why the cranes couldn't be moved, Miami officials said Tuesday in a tweet last week. The project was being developed by New York-based Property Markets Group, according to The Real Deal, a South Florida real estate news website. Attempts to reach Property Markets Group offices in NY and Miami were unsuccessful. Downed trees and debris littered the roads, he said, but the city did not experience any storm surge like it feared.

The city has contacted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and neighbours in nearby buildings, Alfonso said. No one was immediately available to comment at OSHA or the governor's office.

The mayors of Tampa and Miami Beach, two Florida cities that were at one point projected to take a direct hit from Hurricane Irma, said their communities were mostly spared.

"Our cranes are still weather vane-ing", Whiteman said.

Although Irma's eye was almost 100 miles from the Miami area, hurricane-force wind gusts battered the area on Sunday.

In the first case, which happened Sunday morning, the arm of the crane also collapsed, falling onto the top level of the building.
