Illegal immigrants get OK to vote in Maryland city's elections

College Park allowing non-citizens to vote in city elections

It expands local voting rights to undocumented immigrants, student-visa holders and residents with green-cards.

The College Park City Council voted Tuesday night to allow non-citizens to vote in city elections, even if they're in the country illegally. It was a very contentious debate inside College Park City Hall as nearly two dozen people signed up to speak on the matter during Tuesday night's meeting. "I'm hoping that we won't have the circus around it that we had last time". Mayor Patrick Wojahn made the tie-breaking vote against having the referendum.

The city hall meeting was packed and nearly two-dozen people spoke against or for the motion expanding the voting privileges, Fox 5 DC reported.

Both sides clashed verbally - with one man allegedly being called a Nazi while waiting to voice his opinion against the motion.

College Park now joins at least 10 other municipalities in Maryland, which have allowed non-citizen voting in local elections, including Hyatsville, Mount Rainier, Chevy Chase, Glen Echo, and Takoma Park. It's plain and clear.

Todd Larson, who campaigned for the proposal and is co-director of the Green America group, said the change will make the city more inclusive. Those who opposed it said voting is a privilege immigrants should earn with citizenship.

The vote passed 4 to 3 after a heated four hour meeting. The suggestion was not accepted.
