Making the Grade: Virginia releases school accreditation report

Each of the public elementary, middle, and high schools in Williamsburg-James City County have been awarded full accreditation through the Virginia Department of Education.

Fully accredited divisions include Arlington, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Loudoun, Manassas Park and Stafford.

The state defines "passing" standards of learning tests as 75 percent or higher in English and 70 percent or higher in science, history/social sciences, and mathematics.

Across Virginia, 1,573 schools - or 86 percent - earned full accreditation.

"I congratulate the teachers, principals, support staff and other educators in these schools for their hard work and dedication to helping students meet the commonwealth's high expectations for learning and achievement", Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples said in the news release.

High schools must also meet benchmarks for graduation and completion to earn accreditation. "I also want to thank and encourage educators in schools that are making progress as they move closer to achieving full accreditation".

The state combines results of tests in each subject area to produce overall passing percentages in English, mathematics, history/social science and science.

Eighty-eight schools in 27 divisions were denied state accreditation for 2017-2018 because of persistently low student achievement, including Alexandria's Jefferson-Houston Elementary. Thirteen schools that were completely denied accreditation last school year gained full accreditation this year, either through student improvement, or school restructuring.

If the appeal is granted, the two schools will be considered Partially Accredited: Reconstituted Schools, which means the Madison County School Board will have presented a plan to make improvements and meet standards to the state Board of Education that the state board accepts.

State and federal accountability ratings and related information for all schools are available on School Quality Profile reports and the VDOE website.

Forty-eight "focus" schools must hire state-approved school-improvement coaches, including Alexandria's William Ramsay Elementary and Fairfax County's Graham Road, Herndon and Saratoga elementary schools.
