WASHINGTON DC- JULY 27 Sen. John Mc Cain

Senator John McCain says he'll be getting treatment for brain cancer while working in the Senate.

The announcement comes after advice from his doctors following an MRI he underwent at the national institute of health earlier this week.

The 81-year-old senator disclosed his diagnosis in July, and returned home for treatment after casting the decisive vote to kill Republican legislation to repeal and replace the Obama health law. He underwent his first round of chemotherapy and radiation in mid-August and has since returned to the Senate.

Now he is overseeing debate over the defense policy bill.

A spokesperson with McCain's office confirmed he wants to "maintain a regular work schedule" while he oversees the Senate debate on the 2018 Defense Authorization bill.
