Ministers to vote on May's copycat European Union laws

"As a result, I voted against the EU Withdrawal Bill".

The bill also would end the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice, which ensures that law.

The bill was backed by 326 lawmakers of the 650-seat House of Commons while 290 MPs voted against it.

The bill seeks largely to copy and paste European Union law into British legislation to ensure Britain has functioning laws and the same regulatory framework as the bloc at the moment of Brexit, something the government says provides certainty for companies.

Parliament is due to hold a late-night vote on whether to let the central plank of Britain's Brexit plan - the European Union withdrawal bill - move to the next stage of the law-making process.

"Businesses and individuals need reassurance that there will be no unexpected changes to our laws after exit day and that is exactly what the repeal bill provides".

May's Conservative government secured parliamentary approval for the bill thanks to its alliance with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

The UK confirms its commitment to continue cooperation with the European Union, especially as regards sanctions policy. Rebels in both parties warned, however, that they would back amendments created to ensure that the Bill will not be a power grab by government.

It is controversial because it hands sweeping powers to ministers to change legislation as they see fit, without full scrutiny in Parliament.

The bill hands that job to ministers who are appointed by the prime minister.

He said: "Labour will seek to amend and remove the worst aspects from the bill but the flaws are so fundamental it's hard to see how this could ever be made fit for goal".

British lawmakers on Tuesday voted in favor of the government's proposed timetable for debating legislation created to sever political, financial and legal ties with the European Union.

Conservative rebels were preparing to support the government on the Bill's second reading, and some Labour MPs said they would also vote in favour of it, in defiance of their party whip.

The paper also offers to agree joint foreign policy positions with Brussels, including cooperating on worldwide sanctions against states or terrorist organisations.

Verhofstadt said lawmakers are set to debate on October 3 whether the negotiations should be broadened to discuss trade and the shape of post-Brexit relations.
