American author George Saunders is favored to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize for fiction with his novel of the afterlife, "Lincoln in the Bardo".

Roy, who won the literary award worth 50,000 pounds for her debut book "The God of Small Things" in 1997, had featured on the long-list for her latest novel "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness".

United States author Paul Auster tops the short list, whereas British author Ali Smith makes the shortlist for the fourth time with "Autumn".

The works by three women and three men cover a wide range of subjects, from the struggle of a family trying to retain its self-sufficiency in rural England to a love story between two refugees seeking to flee an unnamed city in the throes of civil war.

"With six unique and intrepid books that collectively push against the borders of convention, this year's shortlist both acknowledges established authors and introduces new voices to the literary stage".

The £50,000 prize was opened up to USA writers three years ago, and was won last year by American novelist Paul Beatty for The Sellout. "Playful, sincere, unsettling, fierce: here is a group of novels grown from tradition but also radical and contemporary".

The shortlist was rounded out with UK/Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid's Exit West, in which refugees can use odd black doors to escape to other parts of the world, and American debut novelist Emily Fridlund's History of Wolves, about an isolated 14-year-old growing up in a dying commune in the mid-west.

"The emotional, cultural, political and intellectual range of these books is remarkable, and the ways in which they challenge our thinking is a testament to the power of literature", she noted.

Alongside Saunders are Paul Auster's "4321" and Emily Fridlund's "History of Wolves".

The judging panel, which was chaired by Lola, Baroness Young, had literary critic, Lila Azam Zanganeh; artist, Tom Phillips, the travel writer and novelist, Colin Thubron and Man Booker Prize shortlisted novelist, Sarah Hall.

The victor of the shortlist, which features three men and three women, will be announced on October 17.
