Late last year it was announced that The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 co-director Bruce Straley was undertaking a year long sabbatical from Naughty Dog and wouldn't be directing The Last of Us: Part II. After a decade he rose the ranks to become co-director on 2009's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, alongside series creator Amy Hennig.

"After heading up three extremely demanding projects, and taking some extended time away from the office, I found my energy focusing in other directions, and I slowly realised this was the signal that it's time to move on", Straley said in his resignation letter. It's clear that he is leaving the company on good terms as he describes his time there as "18 of the most influential years of my career" and goes on to thank several of Naughty Dog's current members. After the announcement of The Last of Us Part II late a year ago, Straley stated that he would be taking some time off and therefore won't return as Game Director for the sequel.

Naughty Dog is by far one of the most talented developers in the industry and that is due to all of the creative folks that work at the studio. And for me, I can attribute much of my own personal growth as a game developer to having worked alongside his awesome talent for more than twenty years. "The work culture at Naughty Dog is about getting out of your seat and solving problems together", Straley said.

"I'm leaving Naughty Dog with the strongest team it's ever had, and that's saying a lot. And through it all, I'm even more fortunate to be able to count him as a friend". "With the deepest gratitude - thank you to everyone I've gotten to work with over the years". "I've had my share of hard and humbling moments".

"Knowing I was a part of creating something that touched or moved any of you made this whole thing worthwhile, and now I, too, get to anticipate the next Naughty Dog masterpiece!" he wrote.

Straley concludes by saying he will be continuing "the journey into the creative process", but has no news to report just yet.
