Olympics: Paris, Los Angeles confirmed as Olympic hosts

The last time that happened was in 1921, when Paris again went first, hosting the 1924 games, while Amsterdam took the 1928 games.

"Now Los Angeles 2028 has a golden opportunity, with four more years to prepare and a $2 billion (£1.5 billion/€1.7 billion) contribution from the International Olympic Committee, to redefine how hosting the Games can benefit host communities".

The International Olympic Committee has awarded Paris the rights to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Los Angeles will stage the 2028 Games.

The IOC voted in June to award the 2028 Games at the same time as 2024. The City of Angels will be hosting the Olympics for the third time (1932, 1984, 2028) and the Paralympics for the first time.

Garcetti then signed the Host City Contract to mark the conclusion of the rubber-stamping of the city as hosts of the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics.

Paris, with a total Games budget of 6.8 billion euros ($8.09 billion), had failed with previous attempts to land the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. We're very, very excited about it and I'm excited to be a part of that team.

U.S. IOC Executive Board Member and LA 2028 Chief Strategy Officer Angela Ruggiero said: "Los Angeles has always been a committed partner to the Olympic and Paralympic movements".

"I think the closer we get to the Games, when 2020 [in Tokyo] arrives I think that'll be an exciting time for everyone, getting into the Olympic spirit, supporting the United States team but also knowing the Games are coming here in eight years time".

Officials from Paris and Los Angeles had stressed that their cities already have more than 90% of the facilities they need to host, reducing the additional cost.
